Structure of Split Aircon
As its name implies, the system are separated into 2 parts. One part houses the compressor-condenser unit where hot air is expelled and the other part house the fan coil where the cold air is generated. The fan coil is located in the room while the compressor-condenser unit is located outside the room. There are tubes or pipes connecting these 2 parts for the flow of refrigerant. There is also drainage pipes to drain the condensed water.
Better Heat Transfer and Noise Level
Unlike the casement and portable aircon, split aircon is more efficient and effective in terms of expelling heat. This is because the compressor-condenser unit is located outside the room and usually in the outdoor and quite a distance away. The compressor-condenser unit is located separately and therefore totally insulated. For casement, it is separated by an insulation layer. Some heat will still be passed to the room. For portable aircon, the tube carrying the heated air will also pass some heat back to the room.
Besides heat, split aircon has minimal noise from the fan coil. The noisier compressor-condenser unit is located far away.
With superiority in managing heat and noise, split aircon naturally becomes the preferred aircon.
As it is a better system, split aircon usually costs more than casement aircon and portable aircon. However, you should recover this initial set up cost from the savings from utility bills.
