It is always tempting to install an aircon in the kitchen because it would make cooking more enjoyable in a cool environment.
However, most households in Singapore do not install an aircon in the kitchen. However, there is increasing trend of installing aircon in the kitchen. You may wish to take not of the following points before you install the aircon in the kitchen:
- Heat generated when cooking – you need an aircon with higher BTU to ensure that there is sufficient power to cool down the kitchen while you are cooking. This also means that the energy consumption for the aircon in the kitchen will be higher.
- Dirt, Carbon and Oil trapped in the aircon filter – As the smoke and oil vapour is filtered by the aircon, the aircon in the kitchen tends to be dirtier than the other rooms. As such, it is more difficult to clean and needs to be cleaned more frequently. A dirty aircon (especially with a layer of oil) may not remove heat efficiently. The aircon should also schedule for more steam cleaning and chemical wash to be clean more thorough.
- You should install a cooking hood if you wish to install the aircon in the kitchen. The hood will suck away some smoke and oil vapour so that it will rely on the filtration of the aircon. In this way, your aircon will not be as dirty as a kitchen without the hood. It also sucks away some heat from the kitchen.
After reading the above, are you now having second thoughts on installing aircon in kitchen? Just bear in mind that the aircon in the kitchen will generally require more maintenance and cleaning.
