Aircon installation is not just about fixing a new aircon at your place. The aircon technician must be trained to determine what type of aircon system is suitable, how to install it, where to install it, etc. Will the aircon be under-powered if the room is too big? How many aircon fan coils are supported by the compressor-condenser unit. Where should the drainage pipes be run? Where exactly should the aircon be installed?
For comfort and health reasons, aircon should not be installed too near to your bed. Sometimes aircon installation can be both science and art. Before we go further, let us look at what you should know for aircon installation.
Before an Aircon Installation
Technically, you should know the following parts or terms of the aircon system before the aircon installation:
1. British Thermal Unit
2. Compressor-Condenser
3. Aircon Fan Coil
British Thermal Unit or BTU
BTU is the measurement of power for the electrical appliance including aircon. A fan coil with high BTU means it cool the room faster than one with low BTU. BTU is often stated on the aircon fan coil and compressor. You need a higher BTU fan coil for a bigger room. The fan coil usually has BTU of 9000, 12000, 18000 and 24000. Most bedrooms in Singapore use fan coil with BTU of 9000 and 12000. Fan coils with BTU of 18000 and 24000 may be more suitable for very big room or living room. The compressor will indicate how much BTU it can support. As such, if you have a number of aircon fan coils with high BTU but a compressor which cannot support these fan coils, the aircon may not be effective.
Aircon Fan Coil
When you see a box blowing out cold air, that is frequently called the aircon fan coil. The fan in this box generates cold air into the room. This is possible because the cooled refrigerant is sent from the compressor-condenser unit to the aircon fan coil. When the fan blows the air past the cooled refrigerant, you get cool air.

Compressor-Condenser
Compressor-Condenser is usually located outdoor. This is the machine which removes heat and turns the refrigerant from gas to liquid. It supports the fan coil and therefore must be of the right power to ensure that the aircon fan coil performs at optimal level. When you buy the aircon, there will be instructions on how many fan coils and the maximum BTU it can support.
Let us look at this video to understand how the aircon and compressor work.
Once you have a good understanding of BTU, compressor-condenser and fan coil, you are ready to discuss about aircon installation.
Energy Efficient Label by NEA
You should also take note that aircon comes with different energy efficient label. When choosing an aircon for installation, you should choose the most energy efficient aircon (i.e. 4 to 5 ticks) though it may cost you more. This is because your future cost savings from electricity consumption is likely to be greater than the extra you pay for an energy efficient aircon. In the long run, you should gain.
Prices of Aircon Installation
Aircon installation for a system 3 is usually between SGD2,500 to SGD4,000 depending on the type of aircon and complexity of installation. For system 5, it should range from SGD3,700 to SGD6,000 for an apartment.
