Aircon and Refrigerant Cycle (How Aircon Works)?
To explain how aircon works, you need to understand the aircon cycle. In an aircon cycle, there are 3 main concepts:
- When liquid evaporates to form gas, heat is absorbed. This creates cooling effect.
- When gas condenses to liquid, heat is given off. This creates the heating effect.
- Temperature of boiling point increases when pressure increases. The same decreases when pressure decreases. Boiling point is the temperature when liquid evaporates or gas condenses.
Aircon needs a gas called refrigerant with lower boiling point so that it evaporates and condenses more easily and especially when pressure is altered. The refrigerant goes round and round to cool the room and is assisted by four components – a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve and an evaporator – in cooling the air.
When the aircon technician pumps gas into your aircon, he is effectively pumping refrigerant into your aircon. The refrigerant in vapour stage is then subjected to high pressure at the compressor. This brings up the temperature of boiling point of the vapour such that it can be condensed easily by blowing normal air on the tubes containing it. In the process of condensation, gas refrigerant changes to liquid refrigerant and heat is released. This process takes place at the compressor-condenser unit.
The liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve where the pressure is reduced. This brings the temperature of boiling point down. This means that the low-pressure liquid refrigerant can easily be evaporated by blowing normal air around us on it. The low-pressure liquid refrigerant then travels to the evaporator where the fan blows the air on it. When the low-pressure liquid refrigerant evaporates to form gas refrigerant, heat is absorbed by the refrigerant. As such, you get cold air blowing out from the aircon. The evaporator is frequently called the aircon fan coil.
This cycle repeats continuously to cool the room. This is a very simple explanation of the refrigerant cycle in an air conditioner or AC system. Refrigerator also uses the same concept as the aircon.
